How to Start a Workout Routine You Can Stick With

Consistency grows when you start with a plan that fits real life.

In this guide

Practical principles to help you approach movement at your own pace.

Start with a routine you can repeat

Pick one or two simple activities and a time you can reasonably protect. Five or ten minutes is a meaningful starting point if that is where you are today. Your first goal is to make movement familiar.

Mix movement types over time

As your routine grows, try to include both activities that raise your breathing a little (like walking) and activities that challenge muscles (like gentle chair stands or wall push-ups). Rest and recovery also matter.

Make your plan specific

Instead of "exercise more," try "walk for ten minutes after lunch on Monday and Thursday." If that slot does not work, change it without treating a missed day as failure.

Notice helpful signals

Consider keeping a simple paper note of what you tried, whether it felt manageable and what you want to repeat. You do not need to track weight or share personal health data to build a useful routine.

Build at a comfortable pace

Increase frequency, time or difficulty gradually rather than changing everything at once. For injuries, conditions or concerning symptoms, ask a qualified healthcare professional about safe options.
