Practical principles to help you approach movement at your own pace.
Why start with walking?
Walking is familiar, adjustable and often accessible without special equipment. You can choose your own route, speed and duration. Indoor walking or short walks in a safe space also count.
Try a short first week
Pick a comfortable route and a time of day that works. Begin with ten minutes if suitable, including a gentle start and finish. Rest or shorten the walk if needed.
Find your own pace
Walking speed should suit your ability and experience. You do not need to reach someone else's step target. Be mindful of traffic, surface conditions, weather and safe footwear.
Make it sustainable
Repeat a manageable route or pair walking with a daily activity you already do. A friend or group may help with motivation, but walking alone can be just as useful.
Add variety gradually
When short walks feel easier, consider a slightly longer duration or new route. Stop and get appropriate medical help for warning symptoms such as chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness.
